100 Years Ago March 28, 1908 Important additions are now being carried out at the boathouse at the Evesham Rowing Club and when these are finished, the Evesham Club will possess premises probably second to none in the Midlands. On each side of the present building will be erected an annexe in which the racing boats will be housed; each annexe will have a concrete roof, with balusters at the edge, so as to form a verandah. The existing verandah at the front will be widened and extended across the whole front of the building and will communicate with those on either side. The asphalt slope down to the river will also be widened. Adjoining the back of the existing boathouse a clubhouse will be erected, which will greatly augment the social amenties of the club and promote the convenience of the members.

75 Years Ago March 25, 1933 There was a loss of £124 on the Pershore Flower Show last year and the officers of the horticultural society are of the opinion that the wisest plan would be to abandon both the flower show and sports meeting for this year and to substitute a fete and English fair. The hon secretaries' annual report attributes the loss on last year's show in a large measure to the reduced price of admission. "In spite of a threatening morning," the report states, "the attendance was higher than the previous year, but the deluge at half past five virtually emptied the grounds and all chance of showing a profit vanished". It is pointed out that a fete could be run at very low cost compared with the old flower show.

30 Years Ago March 30, 1978 Work on a major Vale of Evesham flood relief scheme has been delayed a month - by floods. A crane accident is also partly to blame for holding up the £19,000 scheme at Bretforton. It means that traffic diversions remained in force over the Easter holiday while the bridge over Bretforton Brook is being rebuilt. The scheme also involves widening and deepening part of the waterway and removing obstructive trees and bushes from the stream. A Hereford-Worcester County Council spokesman said there was still some difficult work to do on the project, which is designed to eliminate the risk of flooding in Main Street, Drinkwater Lane and Back Lane, Bretforton. The work suffered a set back a few weeks ago when a 25-ton mobile crane lifting concrete bridge sections into place crashed through a culvert and toppled over.
