100 Years Ago April 4, 1908 ARE we going to have an Evesham pageant in 1909? Last week the inhabitants of the town were very sceptical about it. This week a good many of them think it is probable that we shall; if everyone had gone to the meeting last Tuesday night and heard the vicar's speech, we should regard the question as answered in the affirmative. Unfortunately, a good many people who might have been expected to be present did not put in an appearance and there is thus a good deal of misconception on the subject, which the vicar's remarks would have removed. The first thing to be accomplished is to raise a guarantee fund of £1,000. If the people realise what is asked of them, there ought to be no very great difficulty about this.
75 Years Ago April 1, 1933 THE greatest confidence in his fellow countrymen was expressed by Sir Bolton Eyres Monsell, the First Lord of the Admiralty and the Member for the Evesham Division, when he addressed some four hundred of his constituents at Pershore on Friday evening. Sir Bolton, who was given a rousing reception, said that Englishmen would do anything if properly led and if they were told the truth. With reference to the Horticultural Produce Act, he said that he believed there was no fear that the duties on fruit and vegetables would be other than permanent. The act had not only brought £750,000 pounds to the revenue, but had greatly increased and stimulated home production. The meeting was held in the Abbey Garage, which was artistically decorated with Union Jacks, flowers and plants. Several references were made to the remarkable transformation of a busy garage into a spacious and attractive meeting room.
30 Years Ago April 6, 1978 MORE than 40 Evesham residents are protesting to Wychavon about a circus which is to be held, practically on their doorsteps, for five days. The first that the residents of Badsey Lane and Elm Road knew of plans to hold the circus on land adjoining the two roads was last Thursday when an advance party arrived to distribute posters in the town - nine days before the circus was due to arrive. "We were absolutely horrified," said Mr Clifford Wilson, of Badsey Lane. "We still can't believe they're planning to hold this circus right on our doorsteps." The residents have sent a petition protesting about the circus, and the general state of Badsey Lane, to Wychavon. They are demanding a reduction in their rates. Mr P G Rust, chief executive officer of Wychavon, said the circus was quite entitled to use privately-owned, open space land for anything up to 28 days a year without planning permission.
