100 Years Ago April 11, 1908 There has been a considerable change in the weather since last week. The days have been bright and warm but the nights have continued cold. On Wednesday morning the self-regulating thermometer recorded seven degrees of frost in the open and on Thursday morning there were about four degrees. Probably these have caused no damage. The cold nights are keeping back the plum blossom but so far as can be at present judged it will be out for Easter. Open-grown radishes have come in this week but the quality is not first-rate, owing to the continued cold weather. The price on Wednesday was 7s to 8s 6d per score and on Thursday 6s 6d.
75 Years Ago April 8, 1933 A splendid effort on the part of the management, executive and staff of Littleton and Badsey Growers to re-establish the society on a sound financial basis, following serious set-backs of recent years, was reflected in the report and balance sheet of the society presented at the annual meeting at Blackminster on Tuesday evening. It was reported that during 1932 a profit of £544 was made and this has enabled the society to reduce its deficit caused by the loss of shares in the Vale of Evesham Cannery to £144. Isolated criticism of the balance sheet was forthcoming but the society's policy was vindicated when a proposition that five per cent interest on share capital should be paid was defeated by an overwhelming majority.
30 Years Ago April 13, 1978 A small plot of land in France is be named Evesham Square in honour of the visit later this month of 314 Vale of Evesham residents who will be making the trip to Dreux. Taking pride of place in the square will be a red and black painted British pillar box, a gift from the Evesham Twinning Association to their counterparts in Dreux. Mr T Newell, secretary of the local association, told the Journal that the plot was almost in the centre of Dreux outside the Lycee Rotrou School. The box is still awaiting a plaque and when completed will be taken to Paris by Paynes Transport of Wyre. It will be collected from Paris by members of the Dreux committee. Of the 314 people making the trip, 177 will be going by coach, 43 by double-decker bus, 17 by private transport and 37 by pedal cycle.
