100 years Ago April 18, 1908 Monday's meeting at Evesham to create or stimulate interest in agricultural co-operation was not a very enthusiastic gathering but most people have learnt not to expect too much in this direction, so there was probably little or no disappointment. Mr Yerburgh gave a very interesting address on the advantages which may be derived from combination in matters of purchase and sales and in various other agricultural subjects, and some of those present were certainly impressed with what he had to tell them. The Earl of Coventry again showed his interest in the co-operative movement by kindly taking the chair but we cannot help thinking that his speech must have made the organisers of the meeting feel rather uncomfortable. All responsible people who have to do with agricultural co-operative organisation are extremely careful to avoid any semblance of party politics and some of his lordship's remarks very nearly approached the danger zone.
75 Years Ago April 15, 1933 MRS Rusher presided at the annual meeting of the Pershore District and Maternity Nursing Association held at the Institute Hall on Monday afternoon. The report for the year showed that 3,371 visits had been paid to 362 patients, and that there was also 1,131 casual visits, making a total of 4,502. Of those visits, 2,782 were paid in Pershore, 185 in Pinvin, 302 in Wick, 87 in Birlingham and five in Pensham. The report of the maternity and county council work showed there had been 69 confinements to which had been paid 1,002 visits. There were 440 ante-natal visits, and to tuberculosis cases there were 229 visits. To five schools 55 visits were made and there were 237 visits to schoolchildren's homes. Infant welfare visits to children under three years of age numbered 1,405.
30 Years Ago April 20, 1978 Plans for giving Evesham town hall its original 16th Century look have been shelved for at least a year. While the news may disappoint members of the town's civic society, it solves a storage problem for the WRVS and Evesham Operatic and Dramatic Society. Both organisations use the ground floor of the building to store equipment and props. The WRVS has just had its lease renewed for another year. Part of the facelift scheme involves removing the infilling to open up the arches under the town hall, which will automatically do away with the storerooms. The rest entails pedestrianising Market Square and closing the road on the market side of the town hall by making Bridge Street a T-junction with High Street.
