100 Years Ago April 25, 1908 Though Easter arrived late this year, the weather during the holidays was of quite a wintry nature. Cold winds and snowstorms have prevailed, making the lot of the visitor, like that of the policeman in the opera, not a happy one. Yet despite the fact that "the meteorological conditions were distinctly uncongenial," as one of our correspondents used to say, a fair number of people came to Evesham on Good Friday and Easter Monday. On the latter day there was a record gate' for an Evesham football match, no less than £24 being taken at the match between Evesham United Astwood Bank in the Bidford League. The takings on the pleasure grounds on Monday night realised about £14, which is only about £4 less than last year, when the weather was delightful.

75 years Ago April 22, 1933 IT was agreed at a meeting of St Andrew's Parish Council this week to call the attention of the police to the parking of cars on both sides of the road outside the Co-operative Fruit Market and at the entrance to the Pershore hockey and cricket ground. The question was raised by Mr T C Summerton, who asked whether the council had any authority to stop the parking of cars in the Defford Road. He felt that someone would be killed unless something was done. Mr S C Brickell remarked that there had been some considerable congestion of traffic the previous day, when the final of the Pershore Hospital Cup had been played. The opinion was expressed that people should make more use of the town's public parking spaces. The chairman (Mr L G Badham) said that the council could do nothing themselves; they could only complain to the police.

30 Years Ago April 27, 1978 Apart from delaying the growth of spring crops, the coldest April in the Vale of Evesham for 61 years is ruining the plum blossom. It has normally come and gone by the middle of April, but temperatures five degrees below the seasonal average of 48F have made it very late this time. Trees in the low-lying orchards in the Vale have been bursting very reluctantly into bloom this week but it is very thin and patchy and rapidly being overtaken by emerging leaves so that although the traditional Blossom Sunday is likely to be this weekend, it is going to be a non-event. "It will be one of the poorest shows for quite a few years," was the forecast yesterday of Mr N A Field, the Evesham fruit grower and weather observer.
