100 Years Ago May 9, 1908 The residents of Evesham will appreciate the item in the minutes of the highways committee to the effect that as soon as the weather permits, the tar treatment will be applied to the roads in order to abate the dust nuisance. Despite the heavy rains, the roads are now very dusty and as motorcars and cycles appear to be far more numerous than usual this year, life will be unbearable unless something is done to keep down the choking and blinding dust storms. If we remember rightly, the tar treatment was continued along Greenhill as far as the turnpike last year and doubtless the same plan will be adopted this summer. At the same time there are other parts of the town where the dust nuisance is quite as acute. Motorists are constantly rushing along the Hampton road and we would suggest that this road be tarred as far as the borough boundary.

75 Years Ago May 6, 1933 The Bishop of Worcester and Mrs Perowne arrived in Evesham on Monday for an eight-day stay in the Evesham deanery and are making their headquarters at the Mansion House. His Lordship's visit is not an official visitation but he is going to each of the 14 parishes in the deanery in turn, calling upon the clergy and having talks with churchwardens, church councillors and other church workers and officials and, generally, in the case of evening visits, preaching in the parish churches. On Sunday, the Bishop will preach at Broadway in the morning and at St Laurence, Evesham, in the evening. The visit is much appreciated by church folk throughout the deanery and should have a stimulating effect on church work of every sort. The bishop's labours conclude with a visit to Hinton on Monday evening next.

30 Years Ago May 11, 1978 Residents of Norton and Harvington, who claim their villages are being used as a dumping ground for gipsy families will be meeting Mr Michael Spicer, MP for South Worcestershire, tomorrow. Mr Spicer has agreed to attend a special protest meeting in Norton Village Hall and he is also being asked to visit Harvington. At the Harvington annual parish meeting last week Lieut-Col R G Burlingham, Harvington's representative on Wychavon district council, admitted that the gipsies were at the top of the housing list. Col Burlingham told the Journal: "We are not talking of very many people and many of them have lived around the Vale all their lives." He said they were as entitled to being on the council housing list as anyone else. At some time they would get to the top of the list.
