Losing draw on league travels

EVESHAM returned home with eight points following Saturday's losing draw at Water Orton in the second division of the Birmingham and District Premier League.

The hosts elected to bat and Evesham found the going difficult in the heat.

The bowlers, however, stuck to their task admirably with Alex Harrison and Abhi Jhunjhunwala shouldering most of the responsibility for getting through the 55 overs.

After a fruitless opening spell, Nick Powell came back strongly with six tight overs when he picked up two wickets, while Andrew Fisher and Masood Pathan chipped in with a wicket apiece as Water Orton finished on a challenging 244-9.

Indian overseas player Jhunjhunwala struck a quickfire 48 off 39 balls to keep the pressure on the home side but, after he was out, the innings was anchored by Pathan who scored an excellent 35.

Powell ended the day well on 39 not out helping guide Evesham to a final total of 189-6..

The second team slipped to defeat against Water Orton after scoring 163-8.

That total proved insufficient as the visitors comfortably reached their target for the loss of only three wickets.

A young Evesham third string struggled to contain a strong Vine side who racked up an impressive 333-5.

Evesham never really got going after tea and were disappointingly all out for 56.

The first team play host to Newport on Saturday, wickets pitched at 1pm.
