A MAJOR road in Worcester is closed after a pedestrian bridge was struck by a lorry.

The A44 Whittington Road in Worcester is closed with stationary traffic building up.

Police are directing traffic.

There are also reports of slow traffic on the A4440 Southern Link Road and on the M5.

Recovery work is taking place between A4440 and Spetchley Road with congestion on the A44 to M5 Junction seven (Worcester / Evesham).

The lorry has struck the pedestrian overbridge near Worcester Dog Training Centre.

The incident is likely to cause queues to people trying to leave the M5 at junction seven.

The incident was reported to highways at Worcestershire County Council at 7.30am this morning.

A spokesman for Worcestershire County Council said there had been a minor impact between the lorry and the bridge on the A44.

An inspector from highways visted the scene this morning and said there was no structural damage to the bridge.

She said: "The road will be reopened as soon as it is safe to do do."

West Mercia Police had no record of the incident on their log, a spokesman said.
