DOES your pooch have star quality? WODYS - Worcester Operatic and Dramatic Society Youth Section - are looking for a dog for the role of Sandy in the much-loved musical Annie.

The heart-warming rags-to-riches story of plucky young Annie’s journey from the hard-knock New York orphanage to the luxurious home of billionaire businessman Oliver Warbucks, is being staged by the 70 members of WODYS, aged eight to 18, next summer.

The dog must be average-sized, of any breed with medium to long sandy coloured hair (golden to light brown), at least 18 months old, who is good with children, friendly, well-trained and obedient, calm, comfortable with strangers and being away from its master, and available for rehearsals and performances. No experience is necessary.

In the musical Sandy is an abandoned mixed-breed dog that Annie rescues and befriends after she runs away from the orphanage. His, or her, big moment on stage comes when the dog runs to Annie when she calls "Sandy".

Director and producer David Humphries said: "I am looking for a well behaved dog that is comfortable around people (especially children) and would be unfazed at being on stage. In addition, they must be able to follow instructions from strangers (in this case – the person who plays Annie)."

Annie is a courageous Depression-era orphan determined to find her parents, who abandoned her years before on the doorstep of a New York city orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. In adventure after adventure, Annie foils Miss Hannigan's evil plots, befriends President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and finds a new family and home in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary Grace Farrell and lovable mutt Sandy.

WODYS production runs from Tuesday, to Saturday, August 4 to 8, 2015, at Worcester's Swan Theatre with evening performances starting at 7.15pm and also a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.
