HOUSEHOLDS across the county are being encouraged to waste less food and save money by downloading a free app.

The Love Food Hate Waste App, which downloads to mobile phones, could help households keep an extra £60 a month in their coffers by offering up a host of top tips that can help track budgets on the go, plan menus and make the most of those lovely leftovers.

Research has shown the average family wastes around £700 of food each year and wasted food cost Worcestershire residents around £5 million in landfill taxes last year alone.

Councillor Anthony Blagg, Worcestershire County Council cabinet member for environment, said: "It's quite scary how much wasting food costs us all. Luckily, the solution to the problem can be simple.

"Small changes can make a big difference and the great free Love Food Hate Waste App can really help people keep extra cash in their pockets. It's packed with practical information and features, that all of us can benefit from."
