A CHRISTMAS shoebox appeal for animals in need has had a fantastic response.

Last month the RSPCA Worcester & Mid-Worcestershire Branch launched the Santa Shoebox Appeal to encourage people to donate food and treats to the pets in care.

And volunteers at the charity have been delighted by the generosity of people across the county.

Jo Goodyear, a long-time supporter of the charity who organised the appeal, said: "I would like to thank everyone who donated goodies for the rescued dogs, cats and rabbits in the care of the branch.

"It was an absolute pleasure to be able to help the animals, especially at this time of year. The generous donations will make Christmas special for the animals in care."

All the donated food, treats and toys have been delivered to the RSPCA branch office in Worcester to be distributed to many animals in rescue awaiting that special "forever home".

One of the dogs who will enjoy his treats and toys on Christmas Day is Joe, an 18-month-old Boxer cross. Poor Joe also spent last Christmas in kennels and has now been in the care of the local branch for 15 months.

He is hoping that his luck will change in 2015 and that potential adopters no longer pass him by.

Many of the animals seeking permanent loving homes can be seen on the branch website at http://www.rspca-worcester.co.uk/ or by calling Geraldine on 01886 822083 (dogs), Pamela on 01905 841354 (cats) or Louise on 01905 20822 (rabbits and small animals).
