PEOPLE with breathing problems in Worcestershire are being urged to take extra care as winter sets in.

Every year hospitals across the country see a spike in admissions for people with asthma and other conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, who are more vulnerable to falling ill as a result of the cold weather.

Worcestershire’s branch of NHS England has advised these people to avoid going out where possible by asking friends, neighbours and relatives to help with tasks such as shopping or picking up medicine and to make sure they have an up-to-date flu jab.

Public health consultant with NHS England for Arden, Herefordshire and Worcestershire Ash Banerjee said taking a few simple self-care steps could avoid hospital admissions for many.

“I've worked with many patients with respiratory conditions over the years and I've seen how those with help and support have become experts at managing their own conditions,” he said.

"I know that most respiratory crises can be dealt with at home or in the community.

“Patients with asthma or COPD should all have self-management and action plans in place.

“My message to patients and the public is simple – look after yourself this winter."

Other tips for avoiding having to go to hospital is setting up a self-care plan with a GP, asking for a pneumonia vaccine and preparing a rescue pack to be used in an emergency.
