THE Bishop of Worcester donned purple marigolds and an apron to help wash up after a dinner service.

Bishop John helped out at Maggs Day Centre today (March 24) as part of the Church of England's Lent campaign, #Washday15.

This encourages people to take part in activities during Lent and Holy Week as a way of sharing the Easter story in a different way.

Christians are encouraged to do something that will make a difference in their community and get their hands dirty in the service of others.

Bishop John, who is patron of the centre, which helps the homeless and vulnerable in Worcester, said: "Jesus washed the feet of his disciples to remind us that those who follow him should serve others with humility and love.

"Maggs Day Centre is a shining example of people who do just that and I was delighted to be able to go along and do my bit to help."

Centre manager Mel Kirk said: "We are always grateful for people who are willing to come and join our dedicated volunteer team and it was great that Bishop John was keen to roll up his sleeves and get stuck in."

The idea behind #washday15 is that people to go out and wash anything and everything, as a reflection of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples at the start of the Easter story.

Maggs Day Centre is celebrating its 30th birthday this year.
