TWO brave police officers saved the life of a vulnerable man perched on the edge of a supermarket car park in Worcester today.

Their police commander Supt Kevin Purcell praised their actions on Twitter, calling them incredible and speaking of his pride in them.

At one point he was hanging off the edge purely by his hands and is now understood to have been taken to hospital for assessment.

Witness Sammie Byrne said on the Worcester News Facebook page: "It was Asda car park about 6.30pm this evening.

"He was literally hanging over the edge from the top level between Asda and the roundabout at the entrance."

Supt Purcell said the actions of the two south Worcestershire officers from West Mercia Police which involved rescuing a ‘suicidal man on the wrong side of railings’ on the third floor car park was ‘incredible, adding the hashtag #FarMoreThanCrime.

He said in response to the Worcester News requests for more details that the incident happened at around 6pm tonight.

He added: “He was reluctant to engage with them. He changed mind then struggled to get back and the two officers had to first hold him and then lift him back onto the right side.

"He was struggling and panicking to get back was in real danger of slipping off.

The work of police officers is wide and varied, it involves a lot of routine and on occasions some excitement.

"On occasions it requires them to take split second decisions. This often is at times of great stress.

"I am very proud of the officers who displayed great thought and considerable strength to prevent this man falling.”

The Worcester News hopes to secure more details about this tomorrow.
