THE Worcestershire Beacon will live up to its name next month as part of the a chain of bonfires to mark the 70th anniversary of VE Day.

On Friday, May 8, a chain of beacons across the country will be lit to mark 70 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe and start off a weekend of celebrations.

Over 100 beacons will be lit across the UK, attended by veterans and local dignitaries in commemoration of the peace that these and others helped to realise and maintain since.

At the going down of the sun the first beacon will be lit, and it is hoped that within minutes Worcestershire will light its bonfire on the summit of the Malvern Hills.

Towns, parishes and local communities will be joining in this celebration by either lighting bonfire beacons or other beacons as they were lit for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons in 2012.

Alan Smith of Worcestershire County Council said: "This is such a significant moment in our recent history as we celebrate light emerging from the darkness of war, and the triumph of the human spirit.

"Everything we do today is because of the ultimate sacrifice made by hugely courageous people more than 70 years ago. It's really important that we continue to remember and pass on this message to our younger members of society.

"What better way to do this than with a flaming beacon that will be seen for miles around, heralding the start of festivities and events across the county?"
