A PROCESSION of pooches paraded through Worcester before attending a unique service at the Cathedral.

Scores of dogs from across the West Midlands flocked to the city on Saturday for the special service in aid of the Retired Greyhound Trust.

The 'all creatures great and small' animal blessing is one of a number of events being held to celebrate the Trust's 40th anniversary

Around 200 people turned up, with 120 animals - mainly dogs, but with a smattering of cats.

Tracey Parbery, secretary of the Hall Green branch of the RGT, who organised the event, said: "It was a major success - so much so that we've been asked if we'll do it again next year.

"People thought it was a wonderful idea and the dogs were impeccable.

"What was really special was the Memory Tree which the Cathedral had made, where people could remember a pet that had passed away with a heart.

"That was fantastic."

Mrs Parbery said the inspiration for the event came from losing her own much-loved pooch last year.

She said: "It might sound odd but I didn't have anywhere to put a candle as churches are more for the human side of things, but I missed doing that.

"Animals play such a massive part in our lives and I wanted to do something to remember them.

"Having somewhere to hang a heart and pay your respects is lovely."

The Mayor of Worcester, Councillor Alan Amos, and the Mayoress, Sue Amos, welcomed the animals' owners to the service, which was taken by Georgina Byrne.

It included music, animal-related hymns, readings and the Memory Tree, where people wanting to remember a pet that has died could place a memorial heart.
