A TEENAGER has shown "no remorse" for causing a crash which injured two bystanders on Tunnel Hill, Worcester.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Worcester Magistrates Court yesterday (Wednesday) morning.

The teenager pleaded guilty to five offences, which were driving a motor vehicle dangerously, driving while disqualified, using a motor vehicle in a public place without third party insurance, failing to stop after a road accident and obstructing/resisting a police officer.

The court heard that the youth had been driving along North Parade in Worcester on May 21 at around 10.15am.

John Dove, prosecuting, said: "The defendant appeared before Doncaster Magistrates Court in February this year where he was disqualified from driving for eight months for stealing a motor vehicle and using the vehicle while uninsured.

"The recent offences all arise out of a very serious accident. A police officer was on duty in an unmarked police car at about 10.15am on May 21. She saw a silver Ford Mondeo driving along North Parade in Worcester. A check with the DVLA showed the car was uninsured. She followed the car to St Oswald's Road, where she activated the sirens, indicating she wanted the driver to stop.

"But the car accelerated. The officer deactivated the lights and followed the Mondeo in to Lansdowne Road, where she saw the car drive up the hill and drive out of the junction with Rainbow Hill without breaking at all, with no regard for oncoming traffic on the blind turn.

"The officer followed the car and saw it go across the Holly Mount crossroads at speeds exceeding 55mph. The police officer lost sight of the Mondeo, but when she continued on she found the car had now been involved in a crash outside a house on Tunnel Hill. The defendant, who had been driving the Mondeo had hit a parked car at speed, and the Mondeo was described as being "buried" in the Fiat Panda. Both cars, while stuck together, had rotated and the Panda had hit the garden wall of a house on the street. By the time officers arrived on scene, the defendant had fled.

"Two pedestrians had been struck by the cars. One was a 67-year-old woman who was thrown forward, and she received a head injury. The other was a 63-year-old woman who was in the front garden at the time, and she was thrown backwards and she suffered a leg injury.

"A woman in a neighbouring house told police she had heard a loud bang, and saw a male outside. She said he looked round quickly and climbed a fence on to the roof of an outbuilding before going out of sight.

"Two of the passengers from the Mondeo told police the name of the driver. Two officers found the defendant on Fairmount Road, although he initially gave a false name. He was then arrested, and when at the police station gave his real name.

"He was interviewed and gave no comment to all questions, and he showed no remorse throughout the interview."

The magistrates heard how the teenager had a number of previous convictions, including battery, burglary and theft, as well as other motoring offences.

Matthew Ansell, defending, asked for sentencing to be adjourned so that a pre-sentence report could be prepared.

Magistrates said that "all options" would be considered when sentencing, and that the teenager would return to court on July 1.

He was released on bail with the condition to live and sleep at his current address and to comply with the youth offending team.

Your Worcester News requested for the reporting restrictions to be lifted so the teenager could be identified but our request was turned down.
