WORCESTER Warriors fans experienced every emotion going during the rollercoaster Championship final.

But they were celebrating at the final whistle and were not the only ones - with the team's promotion triumph set to bring a major 'shot in the arm' to the city.

The club put their fans through the wringer for both legs of the play-off against Bristol, which culminated with Chris Pennell's 80th minute score on Wednesday.

Supporters were left drained but delirious after the 30-30 draw that rubber-stamped Warriors' promotion 59-58 on aggregate.

Plying their trade in the top flight will bring England's top teams to Sixways next season and propel the city into the national spotlight.

And Mike Ashton, chief executive of Herefordshire and Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce, said Warriors' promotion will offer a real shot in the arm for the city.

He said could bring millions of pounds of investment to the city through tourism and the bigger crowds top-flight rugby will attract to Worcester.

"Worcester Warriors securing promotion back to the Premiership is a fantastic achievement for the club, and will cause big reverberations across the city and county," he said.

"The World Class Worcestershire brand is becoming stronger and stronger, and our sporting offer is an integral part of that.

"The success of clubs such as the Warriors and Worcestershire County Cricket Club help raise the profile of the county, push forward the delivery of key infrastructure projects, drive inward investment and, most importantly, bring visitors from around the country and beyond to Worcestershire, bringing business to local firms and stimulating the local economy in the process."

Lindsay Clayton, secretary of Warriors Rugby Supporters’ Club, described travelling through a whirlwind of emotions during Wednesday's all action 80-minutes.

She said it was fitting Worcester boy Pennell turned out to be the match-winner.

"After the game I found myself apologising to Bristol fans as I can't imagine how badly they feel," Mrs Clayton said.

"It had to be Chris Pennell scoring the final try, it was wonderful and I cried my eyes out and was cheering my head off.

"Everyone who's ever met Chris would know how much he loves Worcester and how it would be impossible to be anywhere else.

"He's so committed and the essence of what the club is."

Mrs Clayton added: "The atmosphere was amazing – I couldn't even hear myself which is how it should be.

"It was fabulous.

"They players didn't give up and we didn't give up either.

"I think I'm going to have to sit and watch it five times to try to get my head around it."

Cllr Lucy Hodgson, a massive Warriors fan, said she and the other home supporters in the sold-out 12,024 crowd were left in a state of "sheer elation".

"It was certainly a rollercoaster," she said.

"With 15 minutes to go you wouldn't believe Worcester would win, but then it was just the most fantastic feeling when Chris Pennell went across the line.

"There were people around me in tears and it was just sheer elation.

"We've followed the Warriors around Europe – and through thick and thin – over the last 10 years and it's just a joy for Worcester and the Warriors.

"I remember when we went up the last time and that was a similar feeling, but I think we almost thought weren't going to do it last night so that was even better.

"Warriors always do things that surprise us and it's fantastic for the city and for rugby in this part of the Midlands."
