A NEW Worcestershire MP has spoken of his whirlwind first few weeks in the Commons - revealing his priorities for the county.

Nigel Huddleston admits he is still getting used to life in parliament after romping home in Mid-Worcestershire with a 20,532 majority.

The 44-year-old former Google worker has already spoken in Prime Minister's Questions twice and secured a seat on the high-profile Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee.

Mr Huddleston has also now set up his offices in Worcestershire, choosing to base himself in Prescott Drive, Worcester, in the same complex as the county's Chamber of Commerce.

The Conservative has taken on Sir Peter Luff's wife, Julia Luff, to run his office and is looking to recruit a researcher and case worker duo tasked with helping him over the course of this new parliament.

In an interview with your Worcester News Mr Huddleston, who lives with wife Melissa and two children, son Tyler, nine, and daughter Mackenzie, six, in Badsey near Evesham says he is slowly settling in to his big task.

"It's pretty much what I expected so far, it's exciting," he said.

"I wouldn't describe it as fun, but it's certainly challenging.

"I reckon I've been doing around 70 hours a week, and there's been a lot of work to get the office set up and running.

"I've got a tiny flat in Vauxhall, in London, for when I am down there which is more like a box but it's all I need."

Mr Huddleston, who was born in Lincolnshire, first stood in Luton South in 2010, losing out to Labour's Gavin Shuker by 2,329 votes before landing the Mid-Worcestershire candidacy.

He is very clear about his priorities for the county.

"It's about the economy, jobs, businesses and tourism, making sure we can grow as a county," he said.

"But what I also want to do is ensure we get our fair share of transport and education funding, so things like making sure Worcestershire Parkway gets delivered and working with the f40 (the campaign group for fairer school funding).

"Because of my background I've got a big interest in faster broadband, helping build the digital economy.

"And I want more investment for the hospitals, there's a whole range of issues, much of it involves close working with the other county MPs because so much of it crosses over into all of our constituencies like Carrington Bridge."

He also says he's already cottoned on to housing being a hot topic in Worcestershire, revealing he is "not anti-housing" as long as it is focused on brownfield land and backed up by roads infrastructure.

He's also had talks with Harry Turner, the chairman of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, to discuss issues like A&E pressures and the clinical review, so he can be prepared to state the county's case firmly to ministers.
