The Bishop of Dudley the Rt Rev Graham Usher will preside, while a number of dignitaries will attend including the Lord Lieutenant for Worcestershire Lt Col Patrick Holcroft, the Mayor of Evesham Councillor Fred Kaler and Speaker of the House of Commons John Bercow MP.

The fortnight will include memorial services; a Battle of Evesham walk; lectures and talks; an Evesham tour by coach, boat and walking; tapestry displays and workshops: a mediaeval festival weekend on August 8 and 9 and it all finishes with a Montford’s Supper at the Town Hall on Saturday August 15.

The centrepiece of the mediaeval festival will the largest mid-13th century re-enactment that’s ever taken place. Apart from watching the re-enactors clashing swords, visitors will be able to see demonstrations of mediaeval living, enjoy food and drink, browse craft stalls and soak up the musical entertainment on Crown and Corporation Meadows and other sites in the town.

Clive Bostle from the Simon de Montfort Society said: ““Abbey Park, Evesham this Saturday from 10.30am, is the place to be. And it’s all free of charge. It’s your chance to witness a great historic event that only takes place every 750 years!

“Launching the Battle of Evesham 750th Anniversary, we welcome a very distinguished guest list to Evesham for this unmissable occasion including the Lord-Lieutenant and the High Sheriff of Worcestershire, the Speaker and the Sergeant at Arms of the House of Commons, Nigel Huddleston MP, and many others.

“Also visiting England, especially for this occasion, is Mr Peter C. Williams who was born at Merstow Green 71 years ago, attended Evesham High School and took part as a Crucifer in the 700th anniversary celebration in 1965. Aged 22, he emigrated to Canada where he had a successful career in law.

“Some priced events for the commemorative fortnight are already sold out, but we have tickets for Monday August 10 if anyone would like to hear Katherine Ashe the renowned American author of novels narrating the life of Simon de Montfort, together with a superb buffet supper.

“Free events - just turn up - include walks on Sunday August 2 and Wednesday August 12 starting at the Almonry at 2pm and a traditional short memorial service on the Battlewell Field, Greenhill starting at 6.30pm on Sunday August 2.”

Antonia Coles, 2015 Battle of Evesham Festival organiser, said: ““This year’s special anniversary spectacle will be packed with so many things for all the family. We are very excited to have over 300 re-enactors joining us, presenting the largest mid-13th century re-enactment in the country.

“There will be full battle re-enactments each day, plus lots of displays about falconry, armoury, dance, music, medieval living and loads more. History lovers will be delighted to hear from renowned writers Marc Morris and Steve Roberts and art lovers will enjoy the art displays on offer.

“There is also a farm and craft market packed with local produce and skilled craftspeople. Don’t forget to taste the specially brewed ‘Battle Beer’ and pop into the tea tent which will be serving medieval cakes and treats.

“The town is really behind the festival too, with many activities taking place in the centre and at The Valley (was Evesham Country Park). There are children’s games and activities, plus crafts and antiques at the Parish Church, Vine Mews and Montfort Meadows (Bewdley Lane). For those seeking a more spiritual and haunting time, Spiritus is presenting a range of talks and ghost tours. Perhaps you’ll see Simon himself!!

“For kids wanting a challenge, we have Simon’s Treasure Quest, a treasure hunt with a prize draw for completed entries. And if you want to be right with the action, join the grand parade at 11am on Saturday August 8 and follow it from the Market Square to the medieval camp. Or enter our twitter competition to win a selfie on the battlefield with the Knights!

“Evesham will bring 750 years of history alive and thrill and entertain everyone who visits. We can’t wait for the festival and to welcoming new people to the town. A big thank you to everyone who has contributed and a big medieval hello to everyone who comes along.”
