A CHARITY which brings films to rural areas is hoping to show more movies in the future after applying for lottery funding.

Rural Reels which puts on film showings at ten locations in the county is applying for new funding after originally receiving a £75,000 grant to set up.

The group hopes to use the money if granted to produce more film showings by buying permanent equipment for each hall rather than portable equipment which has to be shared.

Amanda Henry from Clifton-on Teme’s Rural Reels said: “The film event is a good social occasion as much as anything. You can’t get anywhere past 5 o’clock if you don’t drive.

“We want to expand the event to include sporting events as well as live performances and hopefully with these extra funds we can do.

“It will be a tough slog to get ourselves charity status but it will be worth it if we can do it.”

Currently Upton-upon-Severn Memorial Hall, Castlemorton, Ripple, St Peter’s Church in Malvern, Grimley and Holt, Great Witley, Hanley, Eastham and Orleton Stanford Bridge have showings.

The group also hopes to show films in new venues.

As well as featuring popular films from the cinema, the halls also play foreign films from time to time featuring a buffet from the country being featured.

The scheme is run in conjunction with Artsalive and Malvern Hills Council which are helping Rural Reels to potentially achieve charity status.
