MORE than 26,000 Worcestershire people have signed a petition demanding an EU referendum re-run, it has emerged.

Since the aftermath of Thursday's sensational Brexit a staggering 3.7 million signatures have been added to a deeply controversial petition urging the Government to do it again.

A breakdown of the figures revealed how 26,792 county people signed it so far, with the numbers edging up constantly.

It comes amid an unlikely bid being launched by Labour MP David Lammy, who has called for parliament to refuse to recognise Thursday's vote.

Sir Richard Branson also poured more fuel on the fire by backing the calls for a re-run, saying the Leave vote has "opened a Pandora’' Box of negative consequences" for Britain fed on "false promises".

But senior figures on both sides of the campaign in Worcestershire have sought to dampen any expectations of it being taken seriously, backing David Cameron in ruling out any re-run.

Richard Boorn, who led Worcester Labour Party's official 'In' campaign, said: "I haven't signed it - I don't like the result but I can't argue with it.

"In all good conscience I can't support another referendum - I wish the outcome had been the other way but a democratic decision has been made."

Wyre Forest MP Mark Garnier, who also backed Remain warned: "Ignoring the will of the people will create greater distance between politicians and the public."

Jack Murray, who helped the Leave campaign in Droitwich, said: "There can be no question of another referendum, the country has decided."

The tally included 5,278 in Worcester, 5,965 in West Worcestershire and 4,207 in Mid-Worcestershire up until 2pm today, with the figures rising by the hour - you can view it HERE.

In the north Worcestershire districts of Kidderminster, Redditch and Bromsgrove anywhere from 3,200 to 4,700 people have added their support to it, swelling the numbers further.

Bizarrely the person who started the petition is a right-wing activist who voted for Brexit.

Oliver Healey, from far-right English Democrats party, has complained that the petition has been "hijacked" by Remain campaigners.

He is based in Leicestershire and started it over a month ago when it looked like Remain was going to win.

The petition states: “We the undersigned call upon HM Government to implement a rule that if the remain or leave vote is less than 60 per cent based a turnout less than 75 per cent there should be another referendum.”

Since yesterday the petition has also been embroiled in allegations of fraud, with 77,000 signatures already being removed today.

The House of Commons petitions committee is investigating allegations that some people have managed to register multiple times.
