A SECOND Worcestershire MP has written to the Education Secretary over fairer funding - saying she "shares the concern" of headteachers.

Harriett Baldwin has penned a letter to Justine Greening to express school's concerns after the Government revealed the long-awaited shake-up has been postponed.

Mrs Baldwin says she has been contacted by worried headteachers since last week's surprise announcement.

The West Worcestershire Conservative, a minister herself, has called upon Ms Greening to put right the "long-standing imbalance" to address years of campaigning.

As the Worcester News revealed last Thursday, the crucial funding change is being delayed by 12 months to the 2018/19 academic year to give the new incumbent chance to assess it properly.

Before MP Nicky Morgan was sacked by new Prime Minister Theresa May, she has pledged to introduce the new 'National Funding Formula' from 2017/18.

Mrs Baldwin said today: "I've campaigned for many years to press for a fairer funding deal for our local schools, and welcomed announcements earlier this year on the Government’s plans to redress this long-standing imbalance.

"It was a manifesto commitment at last year’s general election.

"In the last few days, I have been contacted by local headteachers who have expressed their concern about the news the process is on pause, and I share their concern.

"I've written on their behalf to Justine Greening to continue to press for a much needed better deal for Worcestershire schools as swiftly as possible."

Ms Greening said the delay is because fairer funding is "a once in a generation opportunity and we must get our approach right".

For decades Worcestershire has languished among the worst-funded counties in Britain for school funding, much to the dismay of headteachers.

The basic per-pupil funding is £4,231 compared to £5,218 in Birmingham, a startling £987 difference.

In 2015 the Government did come up with a fresh £350 million for the worst funded areas, with Worcestershire getting £6.7 million, and the promise of a fairer settlement under the new formula.

Worcester MP Robin Walker - a former parliamentary aide to Mrs Morgan and how a Brexit minister - has also written to Ms Greening to lobby her over it.
