POLICE have advised people to be on their guard against burglaries in the warm weather.

Officers believe the temptation to leave doors and windows open in the summer can lead to more people becoming the victims of crime.

Insurers may not pay out to people if a burglar is found to have used an insecure door or window.

People are advised to keep ground floor or accessible windows shut and locked in rooms they are not using and to close doors and patio doors.

They are also urged to lock up properly before going to bed and to put away any DIY items, such as ladders and tools, after use.

Timer switches on lamps or radios can also give the impression someone is at home.
