PASSENGERS evacuated a train in Worcester Shrub Hill station today after reports of a ‘suspect package’ in the first carriage.

Emergency services were called to the station at 4.19pm (August 19) after a suspicious item was spotted.

Witnesses say five police officers arrived at the scene as passengers disembarked from the Birmingham New Street to Great Malvern train.

A female guard at the station reportedly flagged the package up to police, who discovered it was a piece of medical equipment.

A passenger told the Worcester News: “We were on the train and the platform went really quiet when the first two officers arrived.

“An announcement was made to say that due to unforeseen circumstances the train would be terminating at this station. So we got off the train and waited.

“I overheard the guard say ‘suspicious’ and suggest that the police enter by a door further down the train.”

The train was then reversed onto a shorter track to the side of the main line, she said.

“A woman near me said something about being delayed and I said there was probably a bag left around and official protocol was in place,” the eyewitness said.

“I said that the quick response and procedures have been followed so quickly that if we were in danger we would have been evacuated.

“I felt safe, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. No one panicked or looked anxious, people were just curious looking at the police.”

The passenger said she barely encountered a delay as a new train was brought to the station for the passengers.

She praised the transport police and rail staff for doing an ‘amazing job’.
