A GREEN Party councillor has voted against renewing 'cheap and tacky' adverts on city roundabouts at a council planning meeting.

Louis Stephen stood alone in his opposition to the 23 roundabout signs up for renewal at the Worcester City Council meeting on August 25.

Cllr Stephen, district councillor for Battenhall ward, said: “I was a lone voice in opposing and voting against renewing the signs. They lower the tone of the city.

“I think they are a bit cheap and tacky as they have all got their own fonts, graphics and colours.

“A white background and standardised font would be much more professional and in keeping with our city."

The councillor told his colleagues at the Guildhall meeting, that the signs should have a white background and standardised font.

Cllr Mike Johnson said: “These are advertisements and organisations will want their logos and colours. That’s the reality of life.”

Cllr Joy Squires warned that the council could be perceived as anti-business if they took control of sign branding.

Councillors also expressed concerns about the signs distracting drivers and posing a safety hazard.

But council officers said in the past five years there have been no reports of the signs causing accidents.

Warndon and St Peter's parish councils also voiced opposition to renewing advertising consent for the signs.

The signs, which need planning renewal every five years, were approved, with only Cllr Stephen voting against.

Cllr Stephen was one of two Green Party councillors to be elected to the council in May's local elections.
