A NEW Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant is on the cards for Worcester but police fear it will attract boy racers.

Planners are seeking approval to build Worcester's second KFC, at the Nunnery Park development, on land to the east of Nunnery Way.

A restaurant, with a bar, and a car park for 126 vehicles are part of the application to be discussed on Thursday.

But police have objected to the project because they fear a pub and fast food joint on the same site could attract trouble.

PC Michael Stephenson, the divisional crime risk manager for South Worcestershire, warned of drivers racing around the car park.

"This policing division has a number of out of town food outlets that operate at similar times to those proposed by the developer," he said.

"All have attracted levels of inappropriate and anti-social activity usually with groups in vehicles gathering... playing loud music etc.

"Therefore a single car park that facilitates the two use classes is not acceptable. But [I] currently object to this application."

PC Stephenson has called for measures which could prevent this type of gathering from happening.

"[I] am sure this would also be of benefit to the public house who as indicated want to be a family friendly place and wouldn't want clients put off by unacceptable behaviour," he added.

There has also been local concern about the project.

Margaret Carpenter, of Spetchley Road, said: "I am against the application due to the fact that there is enough litter around this area."

Ms Carpenter added that she had concerns about the development's impact on traffic.

Worcester City Council planning committee will discuss the application on Thursday.

The planning applicants are Greene King Developments and KFC, as part of the wider St Modwen's Nunnery Park Worcester project, which includes a Jaguar car showroom.

The applicant was unavailable for comment.
