IT'S been a whirlwind start for volunteers at the RSPCA's newly-opened animal rescue centre in Worcestershire.

A dozen cats have already found new homes since The Holdings, in Broomhall, near Worcester, opened to the public two weeks ago.

And that means the charity has been able to take in more cats in need, who are all waiting for their forever homes.

Geraldine Haynes, branch trustee, said: "We're all really happy with how the first two weeks have gone at our new rescue and rehoming centre.

"After a short stay in the new cattery, we are delighted to say that 12 of our cats have now gone to permanent loving homes, including our two golden oldies, 18-year-old Stardust and 12-year-old Ben.

"Since transferring 21 cats from the private cattery two weeks ago, we have also taken in more cats in need through the RSPCA inspectors.

"We want to thank all supporters who have helped us get to this point and to everyone who has offered a loving home to our rescued cats."

The new centre in Holdings Lane, Broomhall, Worcester WR5 3FP is open every day, except Wednesday, between 11am and 4pm.

Mrs Haynes said: "Anyone who feels they can give the love and commitment to one of our cats can call into the centre to meet them.

"One of the lovely cats in our care is Fanta, a four-year-old Old English Tortie, who is very sweet natured and gentle. She is used to living with other cats, but is fairly shy until she gets to know you, so would be best suited to an adult-only home.

"Fanta is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and will be rehomed with six weeks' free pet insurance."

The charity is also appealing for people to join its Cat Sponsorship Scheme.

By donating £5 a month for a cat pen, or £60 for a year, you will be helping to ensure that the branch is able to care for cats in each of the 20 pens for years to come.

The cattery is part of a £1 million project at the five-acre site, which began during a centenary appeal in 2011.

Although the centre is initially focusing on cats, long term there are plans to expand for dogs and rabbits, as soon as the money is raised to fund the next phases.
