BURGLARS rampaged through multiple shops in Worcester's city centre in an overnight crime spree.

Shop doors were smashed along the High Street with an attempted break-in at Clarks and a break-in at Carphone Warehouse last night.

Also hit were hairdressers Avant Garde in St Martin's Quarter and Elevation hair in Astwood Road, where hair products were stolen and thousands of pounds worth of damage was caused.

Halford's Autocentre in Blackpole and Lidl at Newtown Road were also broken into while an attempt was made to break in to Sainsbury's in Warndon.

Police believe the same people may be responsible after forensic officers found matching footprints at some of the shops.

Michelle Goodwin, director at Elevation Hair, said: "I got a call at 8am Tuesday morning from the police to say one of my neighbours had noticed my door was open.

"They had kicked the door in and were in within seconds. The till was on the floor. They had taken all the stock off the shelves, broken the till in half.

"They had taken all my Ghd straighteners and hairdryers and lots of Moroccanoil products.

"The forensic people said they had found a Nike footprint with a zigzag pattern that was the same as the one in Avant Garde and Lidl.

"They think there's two guys. They have them on CCTV but they have hoodies on."

She added: "I'm gutted really.

"There's thousands of pounds of damage. It will take a while but we will replace it."

Anna Dowie, manager at Clarks, said the shop's door was damaged and police suspected burglars may have tried to break it down with a wheelie bin.

She said: "It wasn't until someone came in at 8am that she discovered they had tried to get in.

"I came in about 20 minutes later and saw the window cleaner and he told me about Carphone Warehouse.

"The police have been round.

"They have got a footprint off the door and apparently all the footprints match so it is the same people.

"The forensic people said she thought they had tried to open it with a wheelie bin.

"The door was smashed but they haven't got in so we are lucky if you can call it lucky."

"I think at Carphone Warehouse they got a call at 12.30am or 2am."

Extensive damage had been caused to the double doors at Carphone Warehouse although staff at the shop declined to comment.

Avant Garde, a hairdressers in St Martin's Quarter, posted pictures of the heavily damaged salon on Tuesday.

They posted: "So this morning at around 3.30am our city centre salon was broken into.

"Around 25 lots of Diva straighteners and hairdryers were taken.

"If you see anyone trying to sell please get in touch via ian@agsalons.com."

Halfords Autocentre in the Elgar Retail Park in Blackpole Road, was also hit overnight.

Staff were called at 3.30am to reports the alarm was going off and found the window kicked through and a large TV stolen from off the wall inside the window.

A spokesman from West Mercia Police said they were unable to comment.
