THE city's graduates have been showing off their gowns and mortarboards for a week of graduation ceremonies.

Here we share the stories of a few of those graduates and list the names of those who featured in our graduation specials in Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday's papers.

Student: William Kitching

Wales’ top men’s singles badminton player, William Kitching, celebrates another achievement today, as he graduates from the University of Worcester.

William, 21, from Solihull, who holds the number one position in Welsh national badminton, has completed his degree in sports coaching science and is now using his expertise and skills to help the next generation of young players.

“Since finishing my degree I have been working as a badminton coach for david lloyd solihull - where I currently have a number of individual and group sessions being run on a weekly basis. I have also maintained my links with the university by continuing to coach at the University of Worcester performance centre.

“I have also been coaching a number of other junior county players at different venues around Solihull and working in a primary school coaching multi-sport skills to children. I’m also in communication with Badminton England to go into various different schools to coach grass roots badminton skills to young children.”

William had hoped to represent Wales at the 2018 commonwealth games. “However, I recently found out that Badminton Wales have not got the funding to be able to send anyone to the commonwealth games,” he said.

“Obviously this came as a massive blow to me but I am staying positive and not given up on my dream of competing in the games in the future. I am continuing to train and plan on playing at the Welsh international in November 2017 and then trying to retain my Welsh national singles title for the third year in a row, in February 2018”.

STUDENT: SOPHIE MAY

AN undiagnosed learning difficulty hasn’t stopped one student from achieving First Class Honours in her degree, and as she graduates this week, a bright future lies ahead.

Sophie May, 21, from Walsall, studied Sport and Exercise Science at the University, and despite finding out part-way through her course that she had been struggling for years with undiagnosed dyslexia, she didn’t let that stop her from making the most of her potential.

“The University of Worcester helped me get a diagnosis for my dyslexia, a learning difficulty I had always struggled with but never had any support for,” Sophie said.

“The support system for people with learning difficulties is excellent at the university, and they really helped me understand about good time management and presenting my written work, which really paid off in the third year, when I won an award for my dissertation and achieved a first overall for my degree.”

“The staff at Worcester were very helpful. It’s a smaller class size than some, and that means the lecturers know you on a more personal level and can really support you,” she added.

With a First Class degree secured, Sophie hasn’t rested on her laurels for a minute.

“After I finished my degree I secured a Research Assistant’s position at Worcester, assisting academic staff who were researching the effects of sleep deprivation on exercise performance,” she said. “I have just moved to the University of Birmingham where I am studying for an MSc in Exercise and Sports Science.

Ultimately I’d like to move in to clinical work, possibly in cardiac rehabilitation.”

In addition to her studies, Sophie also had to balance a considerable list of external commitments.

“I compete in dance competitions nationally and internationally,” she said. “Fitting in training and practice for this around my studies, a part time job, and three different voluntary placements took quite a lot of doing at times, but it did make me appreciate the grades more when they did come in!”

STUDENT: LUISA VODICOVÁ

A student who travelled from the Czech Republic to study in Worcester says she hopes her degree will set her on the path to a successful career in business.

Luisa Vodicová graduates from the University of Worcester with a BA (Hons) in International Business Management.

“I am hoping that I will start my career with an international enterprise, be promoted to Chief Financial Officer, and then hopefully become a Chief Executive Officer one day,” said the ambitious 22-year-old.

After finishing her undergraduate studies earlier this year, Luisa enrolled on a Masters’ degree at Worcester and is now studying for an MSc in Finance.

“My father is a manager in a small company, and I do look up to him,” she said. “When I was first choosing what to study I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but knew it would be something managerial. I selected the broadest course possible, where I could learn many different things and find out what I like and what I am good at.

"International Business Management offered lot of freedom in module composition, plus we had the opportunity to go on a student exchange to a different country.”

While at university Luisa got involved in volunteering at the Daisychain Benevolent Fund Bookstore in St John’s, which she said was an experience she really enjoyed.

Luisa’s family are joining her for the ceremony.

“I am excited,” she said. “My family will be there, and I love that the ceremony will be held in the beautiful cathedral with all my friends and classmates.”

UNIVERSITY FELLOWSHIP: RUTH FITZSIMONS

RUTH FitzSimons, who has worked tirelessly to help disadvantage and disabled young people, will receive a Fellowship from the University of Worcester today.

Ruth is currently serving as Chair of the Charitable Programmes National Committee for the Taverners, which distributes over £3m annually.

Having spent her early years dividing her time between New Zealand and the UK, Ruth eventually returned to London permanently, where she worked in a variety of roles across the leisure, legal, and recruitment industries.

In 1985, Ruth established her own global recruitment company for the leisure industry.

Ruth has worked tirelessly in the community, fundraising for the Lord’s Taverners, working in mediation and counselling, and serving as a magistrate for more than 20 years. In fundraising, Ruth led a major appeal that secured £1m for work linked to the 2012 London Paralympics.

UNIVERSITY FELLOWSHIP: RONAN TREACY MBCHB, MD, FRCS, FINAL FRCS, FRCSORTH

A leading local surgeon will receive a Fellowship from the University of Worcester.

Ronan Treacy was born into a medical family in Birmingham where his father was a GP for 40 years.

In 1983 he qualified from Birmingham Medical School and developed an early interest in research and trauma surgery. As recipient of The Royal College of Surgeons Laming Evans award in 1991, he took time out from his training to investigate the role that alterations in Red Cell membranes play in the development of Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

During this time he also developed a biodegradable antibiotic delivery system in association with Aston University.

Ronan was appointed to the staff of the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in 1994.

He ran the Revision Hip Surgery Service for nearly ten years. During this time he helped develop the pioneering Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (BHR) device with his mentor Derek McMinn, leading to the establishment of Midland Medical Technologies, a company founded by the pair to manufacture the BHR device.

For the past decade in addition to a busy clinical practice, Ronan Treacy has taught, lectured and operated around the world and performed televised surgeries in France, Canada, India and the US. In 2008, he was recognised by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham for his outstanding contribution to Orthopaedics in the city.

UNIVERSITY FELLOWSHIP: MIKE ASHTON

THE former Chief Executive Officer of Herefordshire & Worcestershire Chamber of Commerce will receive a Fellowship from the University of Worcester.

Mike Ashton was CEO from 2007 until his retirement in 2017. Since retiring from the Chamber, he has continued to support enterprise and economic development in the region through his role as Inward Investment Ambassador for the Worcestershire Local Enterprise Partnership.

As CEO, he established the Chamber of Commerce as a stand-alone organisation and developed strong relationships with Herefordshire and Worcestershire County Councils, the six districts, Local Enterprise Partnerships and of course, the business community. This involvement was recognised when he was awarded the Worcestershire Ambassador of the Year Award in 2011 and more recently when the Hereford and Worcester Chamber of Commerce was awarded British Chambers of Commerce ‘Chamber of the Year’ Award in 2013.

Mike was the former Head of Enterprise Development at Liverpool John Moores University and CEO of Chamberlink, the Business Link/Chamber Services Company for Greater Manchester. He has been Chairman of a Young Enterprise Region and values the input that education can make to the development of young people and their ability to develop their business acumen.

STUDENT: DANIELLE MORGAN

HAVING returned to education at the age of 30, Danielle Morgan is looking forward to a new future as a scholar.

Danielle, 32, from Worcester, studied for a Foundation Degree in Mental Health, fitting her studies around her job as a Teaching Assistant at Regency High School.

“In 2015, after getting married and turning 30 all in the same month, I decided to continue with the theme of change by going back in to education,” Danielle said. “Initially I thought I might struggle because it had been a while since I was last in education, but the lecturers at Worcester were very patient and supportive. They really helped to guide me back in to it.”

“After a while, something clicked. The lectures began to make more and more sense, and I found I could apply them to my own experiences in work,” she added.

Danielle was awarded an Academic Scholarship from the University of Worcester for her impressive academic work in October 2017. She faces a bright future as a scholar, but for Danielle, her university work is a springboard to helping others.

“I currently work with young people and see first-hand how some struggle with mental health difficulties,” she said. “I want to be able to help and make a difference.

I also have a personal interest in promoting mental health, having seen first-hand the damage mental illness can do to a family.”

“I am currently doing a top-up course that will turn my foundation degree in to a full undergraduate degree, but I’m enjoying it so much that I intend to further my studies, probably with a Master’s, and possibly even one day a PhD,” Danielle added.

STUDENT: LEAH HEWER

LEAH Hewer is hoping the ceremony will be just one of many to come in her future.

Leah, 25, from Colchester, completed a Foundation Degree in Dementia Studies and has now progressed to a BSc in Applied Health and Social Science. And she has further studies planned for the future.

“I have stayed on at the University of Worcester for the top-up degree, and after that I’d like to do a Master’s and ultimately a PhD,” she said. “I want to research personality and the experience of dementia. A lot of people feel that the personality is lost when dementia develops, I want to reconnect them.”

Leah was working in a care home and completing a basic training course on dementia when she met experts from the Association for Dementia Studies based at the University of Worcester.

“My favourite thing about my course would have to be the inclusion of  individuals living with dementia as expert contributors,”

Leah said. “So much of dementia care is about focusing on the individual, and these sessions gave us something much more intrinsically valuable than anything that can be found in a textbook. John, one of the experts by lived experience, said in our second year “I don’t want a carer, I want a friend.” I use that every day.”

For her final assessment, Leah invested all her passion for her profession

in devising an innovative new approach to boosting staff morale amongst

carers.

“My project was about adding a built-in guided reflection as part of the handover,” she said. “At the end of each shift the entire team would get together and go over events that happened throughout the shift. The last point of discussion would always be something that had gone well.

“I made so-and-so smile today”; “Me and so-and-so were dancing earlier, she was really laughing.” I want people in the care industry to be proud of those moments where, even just for a few seconds, they made someone feel better.”

STUDENT: SU HEMMING

SU Hemming overcame a series of challenges to complete her degree and fulfil her dream.

Su, 30, from Worcester, studied Mental Health Nursing and is the first member of her immediate family to go to university.

“I come from a long line of seamstresses,” she said. “After school that’s the path I followed too because I hadn’t got in to college and I thought my options were limited.”

But after starting a family, Su decided it was time for a change.

“After having my daughter I decided that if I was going to leave her behind to go to work, it was going to be for something worthwhile, and so I looked in to studying Psychology at college,” she said.

After completing her college course and a Foundation Degree, Su successfully secured a place on the Mental Health pathway of the Nursing degree at Worcester, but even then there were many tests still to come.

“I lost my father and three other members of my family in the first year, and juggling my course and family commitments was hard,” Su said. “I wasn’t sure I could carry on, but I was passionate about what I was doing and so I kept going. The University were very supportive and my friends and family all really helped me get through.”

Despite facing so many challenges along the way, Su has not only succeeded in completing her degree and fulfilling her dream, she has done so with flying colours.

“I’m so proud that I have achieved what I have and that I can now work to give my daughter a better life and make my mum, partner and whole family proud, while helping people and doing what I absolutely love,” she said.

STUDENT: MAX BANNER

A BUDDING sports journalist, who works as an announcer for Worcester City Football Club’s home games, graduates from the City’s university.

Max Banner has spent the past three years juggling his Journalism studies with his match work, which also involved post match interviews at his hometown Bromsgrove Sporting FC.

Twenty-one-year old Max, who is currently working at a PR company, said he hoped one day to pursue a professional career in sports journalism.

“During my time at university I was given the opportunity to undertake a number of placements in the industry, including at BBC Hereford & Worcester radio and BBC Sport England Online at the Mailbox in Birmingham, as well as getting to interview basketball stars at the Worcester Wolves and going to football matches to report on games,” he said.

“This was all made possible through the University being a superb place to pursue an interest in sports journalism.

There were so many chances to get out and actively see the news, as opposed to just writing about it and that is really great.”

While at university, Max was awarded an Academic Scholarship of £1,000 in recognition of excellent academic chievements.

STUDENT: BETHANY JONES

An Evesham student has taken her first step towards a medical career after completing her studies at the University of Worcester.

Bethany Jones graduates today with a BSc (Hons) in Human Biology.

“I have been interested in Biology since I can remember, perhaps from watching medical programmes and reading biology books my parents used to buy me,” said the 21-year-old. “I think the human body is fascinating and we will never stop learning about the amazing processes which the body undertakes to bring about life.”

After completing her degree earlier this year, Bethany secured a job at Cheltenham General Hospital within the Histology department.

“I think the practical work I undertook whilst at university helped me secure this job as it provided me with real life experience of working within a lab, which came across very professional within the workplace.,” she said. “The type of work involved within Histology is so diverse and interesting, especially the dissection aspect. I would urge anyone interested in laboratory work or Biomedical Science to consider a career within an NHS medical laboratory, the opportunities are endless.”

Bethany said she was excited about today’s graduation ceremony in Worcester Cathedral.

“It puts an end to the amazing three years I had at the University of Worcester.”

STUDENT: TAYLOR CORNES

“Teaching is a vocation which I feel I was born to do and my family and friends all agree,” said the 21-year-old. “It has been an ambition of mine since the age of five, when I was inspired by a teacher at school. Since then, I have always enjoyed imparting knowledge and changing the lives of others through education, despite being the only teacher in my immediate family.”

Taylor decided to stay local to undertake her training, completing a degree in Primary Initial Teacher Education at the University of Worcester.

“For me, there was no other option of where to study,” she said. “At the time that Iwas taking my A-level exams and applying for university, my dad was diagnosed with cancer, so receiving an offer from the University of Worcester was an essential, as I would have to care for my dad during his treatment.

Fortunately, after a successful interview, I was offered a place and my life changed from that moment.

STUDENT: ELAINE WOOD

A MATURE student has proven it’s never too late to go back to the classroom and boost your career.

Elaine Wood from Oldbury, graduates from the University of Worcester today just two weeks after turning 55 and says her degree has already helped her to secure a promotion.

“The course has already benefited me as I have taken on the role of Extended Services Manager for Moat Farm Primary School in Oldbury where my role is to provide high quality wrap around care,” she said.

Elaine studied for a BA (Hons) in Integrated Working with Children and Families “Having completed the Foundation Degree in Learning Support I started to look for a top-up course,” she said.

“I wanted to compliment my current working role of Learning Support Co-ordinator and back up my practical experience with the theory behind working with my students and their families.”

She added: “In the future I would like to move on to a pastoral and safeguarding role with children, with additional needs, where family support is vital to help the children achieve and get the best from their education and life.”

On graduation, Elaine said: “I never thought of myself as being able to complete a degree as I left school with mediocre qualifications. My former line manager, Hilary Gardner, encouraged and believed in me to continue with my studies when the going got tough.

“I feel so proud to have achieved a degree at 55. It is an absolute honour to be graduating from the cathedral in my dad’s home city. I will graduate beside my best friend, Sturcha Wynn, my study buddy, and we will celebrate our success together with our families.”

STUDENT: SARAH BAKEWELL

SARAH Bakewell has successfully completed a Master’s in Education while working full time at a primary school and juggling an international sporting career.

Sarah, 29, from Ashby de-la-Zouch, said: “After I finished my first degree I spent years teaching children to swim and working as a personal trainer. That was where I developed a passion for teaching, so I decided to go back to university to study for a PGCE in Primary Education.”

Having completed her PGCE at the University of Worcester, Sarah successfully secured her first full time teaching post, but she felt she still had unfinished business in the academic world.

“After putting in the effort to complete the PGCE whilst working full time, I knew this was something I was capable of, so I decided it made sense to use the 60 postgraduate credits I had from the PGCE, and top it up to the 180 you need for a full Master’s,” she said.

“It helped that the lecturers at Worcester were all very knowledgeable,” Sarah added.

“They brought a variety of experience to the table which held my interest and made it all feel worthwhile. Plus which, the University of Worcester in general has a very welcoming feel to it, which made it an enjoyable place to study and socialise.”

Aside from studying and working, Sarah is a triathlete and last year represented Great Britain at the Xterra World Championships in Maui, Hawaii.

“I believe that exercise is key to a healthy lifestyle and with that comes motivation and dedication to both work and recreation. To fit all this in is hard and takes a great deal of organisation, but the early morning training sessions set me up for the day ahead at school.”

For her Master’s thesis, Sarah researched the cultural barriers that affect access to sport within multicultural communities, a topic that has had a real tangible impact on her professional work in school.

“Living and working in Birmingham, it can be evident that socioeconomic and cultural factors play a key part in the provision of sporting facilities, and in this case swimming lessons,” she said. “It was fascinating conducting parent interviews and questionnaires to really dig  into any potential cultural barriers when it comes to sport. The results were not only beneficial to me but to my school as the action plan that I created has been implemented, contributing to the success of our swimming provision.”

UNIVERSITY FELLOWSHIP: REV’D CANON DR GEORGINA BYRNE
