The shocking state of the Houses of parliament led two of Worcestershire 's MPs, to vote for MPs and Lord to leave the site while it is repaired and restored.

Both Worcester's MP Robin Walker and Mid Worcestershire's Nigel Huddleston voted for the 'full decant' option - at a cost of £3.5 billion - which will see the buildings vacated to allow work.

Mr Walker said: "I used to sit on the administration committee and that convinced me of how many problems this building has. I was very concerned at the huge cost but it means the work will be over quicker - we must have a rigorous timetable and a clear date of return."

Mr Huddleston said: "I haven't been in Parliament long, and after a tour of the basement- the dungeons of the palace - I was genuinely fearful for the safety of everyone here.

"The cost is huge and a worry, but I do believe that there could be a catastrophic fire or other incident here that really could endanger the lives of everybody here, and I couldn't forgive myself if that happened."

Sajid Javid, MP for Bromsgrove and Redditch MP Rachel Maclean voted against the plan.
