Family butcher to shut after 85 years

AFTER serving the community for 85 years, a family-run butcher’s in Kemerton will close its doors for the final time later this month.

John Walker butcher’s first opened in 1927 when Arthur Walker arrived in Kemerton.

The business has stayed in the Walker family since, with son John taking over and eventually passing it on to his own son Martin, who still runs the butchers with his wife Creana.

Now the couple, who are nearing retirement age, have announced plans to close the shop at the end of March and convert it into a bungalow.

Martin Walker said: “I am getting near retirement age and times are hard. We will be staying here in the village.

I have lived here all my life.

“I have worked at the shop all my life. I started when I was about seven or eight. It has changed considerably over the years. The way of life has changed and people have changed and you didn’t have supermarkets then.

“Until last year we used the van. When I was younger we used to travel to different villages each day delivering the meat. I still deliver for one or two of our older regulars. In the old days if you were out on the van and it snowed or rain it just went down your neck.
