Cornfields? Robins’ Nest? Or even the Landing Strip? What should we call new stadium?
2:30pm Thursday 19th April 2012 in Evesham
Evesham United’s stadium off Cheltenham Road is ready for action. But what should it be called?
WITH Evesham United’s new ground due to open in the summer, attention is turning to what the new stadium will be named.
Work on the access road into the stadium – which needs to be built before the team can use the state-of-theart facilities – has been progressing throughout April and the estimated end date of the project is June 29.
Journal reader Clive Richards contacted us last week to suggest that the stadium should be named Cornfields in a nod to the previous use of the land and urged the club’s board to steer clear of giving the ground a ‘boring’ name such as Cheltenham Road – where the ground has been built.
Speaking to the Journal this week, Robins chairman Jim Cockerton said that the name of the ground had not yet been decided. The club is on the lookout for sponsors who may want to name the ground after their business but he also said that the club was open to suggestions from supporters. He said: “The work on the access road is progressing well and if all goes to plan then we should be in there in about 10 weeks.
We have been on the lookout for sponsors for the new ground and there has been some interest – but as we all know it’s a difficult economic climate at present.
“If any businesses do want to get in touch then we would welcome that and we will take a look at suggestions for ground names as well.”
The stadium itself is built and ready to be used and when the troublesome access road is complete, the club can officially move in to its new home.
The opening is set to take place on Saturday, July 7, when Evesham United will take on a Manchester United legends team.
