OCTOBER sees the onset of Autumn and the members of Pershore WI were pleased to have a demonstration of cooking with seasonal vegetables at their monthly meeting.

The demonstrator was Liz Hughes from Malvern and she brought along and identified several different unusual autumn squashes. Her recipes based on squashes, onion and beans included a risotto and a casserole. Everyone had a taste of the dishes afterwards. Helen Roe gave the vote of thanks.

Audrey welcomed four new members to the meeting. She thanked Ann for organising the recent cream tea outing, and reminded members of the Group outing to Cribbs Causeway on 6th November and the Birthday Dinner at The Berkeley on November 25. The Baton Celebration afternoon had raised over £400 which had been divided between the Worcester Breast Care Appeal and St Richards Hospice.

Members were informed of the “World War One in the Vale” exhibition at the Almonry Heritage Centre, Evesham on 16th October and Audrey will lay the wreath on behalf of the Institute at Remembrance Service at the Abbey on November 9.

Pam gave details of forthcoming skittles matches and requested names of those willing to take part.

Members continue to be busy making craft items and Gill announced our objective of producing 100 scarves (using any method) which would be independently judged. The next craft meeting at the White Horse will be on October 23.

Margaret gave an interesting report on the Autumn Council Meeting held at the Three Counties Showground on 16th September.

The competition based on the number “9” was won by Helen (domino), Daphne (cotton reels) and Elizabeth (Sudoku).

The next meeting will be held on Thursday, November 13 at 7.30pm in the Wulstan Hall. The speaker will be Robert Speight who will tell of his experiences as Pershore’s Town Crier. The competitions will be for a craft item made in the last year for which the Craft Cup will be awarded, and for an item based on the number “10”. Visitors will be very welcome.
