DID you know that you can use Sweet Cicely as a substitute for sugar, or that Marigold flower petals contain lutein which helps to protect the eye? These were just some of the fascinating facts that members learned when listening to Julia Scott talk to us about her walled herb garden at our meeting in November. The garden itself had originally started life in 1839 as a walled kitchen garden but had gone into a state of disrepair over the years. Julia and her husband had unearthed the original garden design and restored it to its previous Victorian splendour with a number of herb beds for different uses including medicinal and cooking.
Members were enthralled as Julia talked about her garden, different herbs and their properties, and gave tips on their usage. A visit will be arranged next year to appreciate the garden and its many features in person including insectariums, dipping pool and topiary.
The next event is on Thursday December 4 when we will be getting into the festive mood with a skittles night at the New Inn in Willersey, including a hot buffet. This will be followed in the New Year with a very topical meeting on Thursday January 8 when Vivienne McGhee from the Hardy Plant Society will be talking to us about plant hardiness.
Bretforton Garden Club provides a great opportunity for people to learn about a variety of gardening topics in a friendly environment and enjoy interesting days out.
