OUR packed January meeting was enlivened by an account of the romance between Elizabeth 1 and Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, nicknamed ‘Gypsy’ because of his dark good looks. Gillian White took us through the Queen’s visit to his home, Kenilworth Castle, in July 1575, during a Royal progress, when Dudley spared no expense in entertaining her during a bid to persuade Elizabeth to marry him, even to building her a special house and garden within the walls.

She enjoyed hunting, plays, dancing, boating, picnics, fireworks and much delicious food, but also endured some tedious eulogies, all to no avail, for as we know, she died a Virgin Queen.

Recently 43 members enjoyed a lovely post Christmas Lunch at The Manor House Hotel .

Our next Meeting will be held in the WI Hall on Thursday, February 12 at 7.30 when the speaker will be Richard Kemp with his talk on “Bookshops, Civic Identity and Wealth Creation.”

Due to our recently increased membership, we are unable to accept any new members or visitors for the time being but do register your interest with Jo on 01608 650821 and join our short waiting list.
