ON Thursday, March 5 members were enthralled listening to Leila Jackson from T3 Wall End Nursery talking to us about ‘The Show Circuit and Designing a Show Garden.’ Leila works in a family-run nursery in Herefordshire with her father and has developed a specialism in Abutilons, holding the National Collection. This has led to them taking part in the major RHS Shows, where they have won ‘gold’ awards a number of times and they will be exhibiting at Chelsea this year for the first time. People imagine the show circuit to be glamorous – it isn’t! There are many challenges but these are outweighed by the prestige and satisfaction of getting it right. Leila also explained her passion for growing and propagating which had led to a number of new varieties of Abutilons being developed, leaving members keen to acquire some of their own.

There is no meeting in April but instead we have an evening outing to the beautiful 7 acre gardens at Conderton Manor near Tewkesbury on April 23. The garden has been recently replanted in a contemporary style with magnificent views of Cotswolds. Many unusual trees and shrubs make this a garden to visit in all seasons.

We are also busy planning for Bretforton Open Gardens which will be taking place on Sunday, May 31. There are many gardens to visit ranging from attractive cottage gardens with rose pathways and herbaceous borders to the stunning grounds of Bretforton Manor.

Bretforton Garden Club provides a great opportunity for people to learn about a variety of gardening topics in a friendly environment and enjoy interesting days out. We would be delighted to see any new members who wish to join. Please go to our website www.bretforton-gardenclub.co.uk for more information.
