WE WERE delighted to hear this week that Dennis Hallett’s family have kindly donated his projector to our club. This generous gift will enable us to remember Dennis and his intuitive grasp of new technology and we express our grateful thanks to Rita and her family.

Our speaker was Bob Shaw, Chairman of Defford Airfield Heritage Group at Croome Park. The Croome Park National Trust property is well known locally but what is perhaps less well known is that the equipment that won the Second World War was developed at RAF Defford. The development of RADAR features highly in the history of Defford. This enabled enemy aircraft and submarines to be detected much sooner than previously. The other significant feature was the development of the autopilot system which enabled night-time and foul weather landings by our aircraft. Bob’s book, ‘Top Secret Boeing’, available from good bookshops, provides all the detailed information about this project.

The Heritage Group have an open weekend on July 11 and 12 at Croome Park when there will be flypasts by the Lancaster bomber and the Spitfire.

Once again we found this subject very interesting and Bill Birch thanked Bob on behalf of the Club.

On April 30, Brigadier Ian Shapter will present the exploits of the English archer and his longbow at Poitiers and then on May 7 Tony Butler will explain to us non-cyclists what Le Grand Depart is all about.
