ON Thursday, May 21, we were treated to a fun filled evening. Dr Colin Harris came to talk about ‘The Merrie Month of May’. He spoke about May Day customs throughout the ages. He included some particularly weird and zany customs from the many hundreds , which exist throughout the county.

Dr Colin Harris brought along his model of a representation of The Green Man, with the customary green face covered in green leaves. His model also had a ladybird in the folds of leaves , which he asked us to find. The Green Man can be found throughout the country on churches and buildings. It is generally interpreted as a symbol of rebirth , representing the cycle of growth each Spring. Sometimes he appears in human form at various folk festivals such as

The Clun Green Man Festival.

Winners of the competition for ‘A Posy’ were first place Mary Emerson, second Karen Furness, third Ann Price and fourth June Hancox.

Our speaker on June 18 is Brian Ellis. His talk is called ‘Texture and Foliage in the Garden’. Time-7.45pm Venue- The Crawford Hall . Visitors are most welcome. Please call 01789 268974 for further details.
