AT THIS week’s meeting, Nigel Jenkins asked members if they might join him in making a donation to the Rowing Club for their new boat. He was amazed at the generosity of fellow members with the total raised so far of £325!

We then prepared ourselves for Bob Young’s Les Deux Canards, which turned out not to be the so-named Paris restaurant, but a trial for us to assemble and race two robotic ducks. Unfortunately for us, they were in pieces, with little nuts and bolts and electrical connections as well as pictures of the ducks. And if only our families, and especially grandchildren, could have seen us, they would have roared with laughter!

Some 25 senior citizens fumbling with the tiny parts, as well as trying to cut out and colour in and glue the cardboard ducks was a sight that will stay with many of us for a very long time. Some of us even took our ducks home to show what we get us to at the Probus Club.

Eventually, and after a series of heats and the final, the winning team comprised Steve Swarbrick, Cliff Blackborrow, Andy Richardson, Nige Jenkins, Brian Ireland and me.

We all agreed that this had been a wonderful change from our usual guest speakers and we thanked Bob for showing us how to have a lot of fun.

Our speaker on July 23 will be Katy Bellamy on the Joy of False Memory and then on July 30, Cliff Blackborrow will have something special for us.
