WE WERE pleased to welcome Sheila Tremellen at our September meeting who gave us a really interesting and inspiring talk on the work of The Protection of Unwanted Puppies Society (PUPS). Sheila takes in unwanted puppies from two to eight weeks old. Puppies who have been abandoned, handed in to RSPCA or other animal charities, puppies that have been abused and cruelly treated etc and she nurses and nurtures them until they are fit and old enough to be re homed. This work requires a great love of animals, patience and stamina as most puppies need feeding with a dropper every hour day and night and Sheila does it all. A truly remarkable lady.

The WI Movement is 100 years old this month. The first WI in the UK was formed on the Isle of Anglesey. Many celebrations have been taking place with the two most prestigious being a Garden Party at Buckingham Palace for W.I. members and the Annual Council Meeting being held at the Royal Albert Hall in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen, the Princess Royal and the Countess of Wessex, all three being WI members.

Badsey WI was founded in March 1927 and so is 88 years old and still going very strong, like a lot of its stalwart members. Our celebration of the WI Centenary is Afternoon Tea at the Three Ways House Hotel, Mickleton and following several fund raising events the presentation of a new wooden bench to be sited outside the Church in High Street.

The final fund raising event was a Quiz with Fish & Chip supper on Saturday night. This was extremely well supported with nineteen teams taking part. Eileen Goodall did a great job of organising the quiz with questions suitable for all abilities. We know it is not an easy feat arranging a quiz but Eileen did a superb job and we thank her very much as it raised over £200 towards the bench. It was a great evening with a noisy happy atmosphere. Fish & Chips were supplied by The Rainbow Chippy in Port Street and arrived hot and delicious. A big thank you to them for preparing 74 suppers which were all ready to be picked up on time and were welcomed and enjoyed by all.

Next month on October 14 our speaker will be Yvonne Cocks on the First Female Paramedic on the Ground and in the Air. All are welcome. Our meetings begin at 7.15pm and are held in Badsey Remembrance Hall.

A happy birthday to the Womens’ Institute.
