AFTER our summer break, Pershore WI members met again in September. We were pleased to welcome falconer Mike Cope on a return visit, this time with his peregrine falcon called Malachi Martin. Mike gave us a really interesting talk about this bird of prey, describing features of its anatomy and how well it is suited to its lifestyle. Peregrines feed on pigeons and this is why they are becoming more common in city centres. They are able to see their prey on the ground from high up in the sky and then they drop vertically downwards on to the pigeon at a speed of up to 220mph. Having killed its prey instantly, the falcon then leaves it and circles around and comes into land again on the pigeon and proceeds to eat it on the ground. Malachi loves to bathe to keep his feathers in good condition. It was lovely to watch as Mike held Malachi and spoke to him : the rapport was obvious. Elizabeth Kearney gave the vote of thanks.

Following refreshments, president Audrey Whitehouse conducted the business. There were several forthcoming events including the County Annual Council Meeting on October 20, the Group Quiz at Wyre Piddle on October 30 and the Group Christmas shopping trip to Cardiff on November 3. We are also planning other events and activities to celebrate Pershore W I's centenary next year.

The competition for the Plate Trophy for a photo of a bird taken by the member was won by Janet Arnold.

The next meeting will be held at 7.30 pm on Thursday, October 8 at the Wulstan Hall. The speaker will be Mr Alan Thornton on " A day in the life of a Hotelier". Visitors will be most welcome.
