WE met on January 21 at the Crawford Hall and enjoyed a very informative talk by David Brazier about the Abbey Gardens, Tresco, Isles of Scilly. When Studley College closed in 1969 a Trust was formed to provide grants for students. Three of these students go for a year's training to the Abbey Gardens, which is a wonderful experience for them. The gardens enjoy a sub-tropical climate, cover 17 acres and comprise 3 terraces, all with different soil types. There is an extraordinary diverse collection of plants from 60 countries, protected by wind breaks and all created by the founder Augustus Smith. The island is also an important bird-watching centre and gig rowing is the main sporting activity. Many of the students go on to very skilled jobs after their year in Tresco and one or two have even stayed!
The monthly competition was won by June Hancocks and the next meeting will be on February 18 for a talk entitled 'A Warwickshire Wood' by Frances Freeman. New members and visitors (£3 inc.refreshments) are always welcome. For further details telephone 01789 268974, www.bidfordgardens.com
