PRESIDENT Brian Ireland opened our meeting on April 14 with a round-up of members’ news. He then warmly welcomed our speakers, Mike and Lavinia Hardwick of Droitwich who have travelled extensively.

The subject of their presentation to us was Round the Horn, which chronicled their cruise round South America. With vivid imagery and instructive commentary, we were transported from Santiago down the coast of Chile to Punta Arenas, round Cape Horn and across to the Falkland Islands. From there it was up to Buenos Aires, then Montevideo and terminating in Rio de Janeiro. Throughout this remarkable journey, Mike and Lavinia took hundreds of photos which illustrated their presentation. As a travel documentary it gave a fascinating insight and was a superb overview of the many extremes they experienced.

They responded to our questions and comments and were congratulated on the professionalism of their film. Bill Underwood thanked them on our behalf.

John Cotton will summarise his life story for us on April 21 and then on April 28 we shall learn about nocturnal starfish. Whether these are to be found in the river Avon remains to be seen.
