Trip to Wollerton Old Hall Garden

Wow, wow, wow! W for Wonderful and W for Wollerton .

Chris Beardshaw certainly wasn’t joking when he described it as one of the finest examples of an English country garden.

Our annual outing to this lovely 4 acre garden on Wednesday July 6 was well-timed from the point of view of the flowers on display and the weather which was kind to us.

We were given an informative introductory talk and walk by Phillip Smith who seems to have a lot of hats including trying to keep the extensive flower beds under control. Then we were left to our own devices to explore the many ‘rooms’ at the rear of the house and to drink in the colourful displays of roses, phlox, salvias (of which they have over 100), and delphiniums to name just a few.

Lesley Jenkins who owns the house with her husband John, was originally brought up in the 16th century house, moved away and then bought it back in 1984. They both have made the garden what it is today and what a credit to them it is. She is a friend of David Austin and there are some lovely examples of his roses including Lady Emma Hamilton, the Lady of Shallot and even one named after the house itself.

The tea room and food were first-class and most of us came away with a memento of our visit of course. If you’re looking for anywhere to go for inspiration, put this on your list. I’ll certainly be going back (http://www.wollertonoldhallgarden.com/news.html).

We’re now on countdown to our annual Summer Show on Saturday 13 August at the Villages Hall, with over 70 classes to enter including photography, craft, floristry, home produce and children’s section. See our website to download a schedule or contact us (email: info@bishamptongardeningclub or ring 07854 362318 for more information).

Our next outing is a private visit by car to Bourton House (http://www.bourtonhouse.com/) in Gloucestershire so please join us!
