WE were very pleased to have The Appleyards dance group at our April meeting. It was a great way to welcome Spring, with their energetic dances, lively music and bright costumes. The group were formed in 1991 to dance at celebrations for Oak Apple Day and they have been appearing at various local events ever since.

Squire Peter, the leader of the side, explained that they performed many traditional dances including Morris, Border, Cotswold style and North West style. After demonstrating some dances using garlands and sticks adorned with ribbon and bells, they asked us to join in with a “handkerchief” dance. Our attempts caused much laughter, but the dance was a fun way to end a very enjoyable evening. Sheila Allies gave the Vote of Thanks.

After a break for tea, coffee and cakes the business meeting was held, with Audrey Whitehouse presiding. Our AGM will take place next month and several members have expressed interest in joining the committee.

There were two competitions this month. The theme for the monthly competition was “Scotland”. The winners were 1st Jean Barton, 2nd Janet Cullis and 3rd Christine Daley. The annual competition of a flower arrangement for the Jean Drew Plate was won by Beth Milsom, with Elizabeth Kearney 2nd and Jean Rogers 3rd.

Our next meeting on 11 May will begin with our AGM, followed by the usual business meeting. It starts at 7.30 pm at Wulstan Hall, Priest Lane.
