PEBWORTH IN BLOOM

LAST year the village entered the RHS Britain in Bloom competition as a way of bringing the community together. From the start it became obvious that there was tremendous enthusiasm and the first “Big Clean Up”, which focused on the church car park, attracted nearly 40 volunteers of all ages.

Bribed with homemade soup, teams have tackled the village hall environs, the churchyard and the entrance to a housing estate, cutting back brambles and dragging out dead trees. A litter pick collected 30 bags of rubbish, the churchyard now has a wildflower area, notice boards were painted and bus shelters cleaned, the Forest School has been regenerated and residents sponsored stone troughs at the seven entrances to the village, which were planted up. On the day of judging which happened to be a Friday 13th, the village looked a picture – all you could hear the weekend before were the sounds of mowing and strimming!

Planters underneath street signs added colour to all the hanging baskets and pots which villagers had placed outside their homes.

The two Britain in Bloom judges were particularly impressed with the fantastic work at Pebworth School where the children have created a wildlife haven, vegetable garden, miniature orchard and homes for insects. Pebworth was awarded silver, at our first attempt! Now let’s see what 2013 will bring.
