Laura and Becky, two attractive ladies from ‘Beauty Beyond’ in Winchcombe, spoke at our March meeting on how we should all care for our skin and gave a demonstration of the art and science of make-up. Our president, Jill Giddy, was their ‘guinea pig’ and thoroughly enjoyed the sensation of being pampered. As many of us already knew it is strongly recommended, by all beauticians, that we should never put soap on our faces, proper cleansing and a good foundation being the most important aspects of taking care of our skin and looking good. We learnt many useful and practical tips and short-cuts.

At the March meeting, novelist Jane Bailey gave members a very comprehensive, interesting, and often amusing insight into the writing of a novel. Jane has, to date, written four and is now starting on a crime novel. The four already written were set in wartime rural Gloucestershire. There was quite a long gap between the writing of the first two and the last two because Jane developed serious eye problems which caused much difficulty. But with courage and determination she managed to complete the last two novels and now that her eye problems are, hopefully, being stabilized she hopes to continue writing. We learned the golden rules governing the writing of a novel. Careful research is important and can be great fun. It can be far reaching but often only a little is used. Imagination plays a big part, based on stories one hears, often from parents or other members of an older generation. Fictional writing should all me be up and never based on oneself or ones own experiences. Also, the writer must know what they want the ending to be before starting to write. It is necessary to mull a story over in your mind ‘incubate it’, get to know the characters before starting to write. Suspense is a necessary part of any novel and a little of it built in as you go along makes the plot ‘tick’. However, despite the many hours of work needed to write a novel, the shelf-life of a newly published book is only twelve weeks. At the end of her talk Jane invited questions and the number of members who responded showed how interesting the subject had been to everyone.

President Diane Barlow welcomed members to the February meeting where Mr Rod Quilter entertained us with the history of Corsetry. From three large suitcases he produced a fascinating array of undergarments, ranging from voluminous salmon pink corsets, boned and laced, an early German design made from woven paper (rather scratchy), an amazing rubberized all in one, certainly no hanky panky with it's wearer, to more familiar looking roll ons and suspender belts Diane thanked Frances Wilkinson for arrranging the very succesful dinner which we had enjoyed at Evesham Golf Club in January, it was unanimously agreed to make a return visit in 2011. Frances gave details of the late summer visit to Chatsworth in September. Invitations have been received to the Spring Group meeting at Eckington, the Daffodil meeting at Fladbury and the Worcestershire Federation of WI's Annual Council meeting to be held at the Severn Hall, 3 Counties Showground.Annie Hartwright gave the final arrangements for the Cookery School at Eckington Manor in April.

Entertainment for the evening was presented by Alison Kennedy, winner of the ‘Costa’ book prize. This was very humorous and interesting relating to her experience as a teacher. Having missed our January meeting due to the weather, though we had been able to hold a very enjoyable ‘birthday’ supper later in the month, we were glad to meet again in February to hear Mary Philpot relating the highs and lows of being a jockey’s mum. Her talk centred on the life of her son, Chris Honour, who had decided at a very young age that he wanted to be a jockey. He has had several three year stints with well known national hunt trainers, sustained a broken collar bone many times but has had a successful career so far, Fakenham being a particularly lucky course for him. Mary’s horses have provided rides for him and she admitted that she often ‘watches’ races with her hands over her eyes until Chris is safely over the last fence! Her talk was illustrated with excellent slides and video film of some of his races and falls! Val Svendsen gave the vote of thanks and the competition for an equine photo was won by Rosemary Gyles with Dorothy Gibbs second and Jan Gillard third.
