IF you think that folk music and folklore is boring you would be wrong. We had an amazing evening with Richard Churchley. He combines his love of music with his love of history and musical ability to provide information and entertainment. We began with A Victorian folk song “Johnny Me Own True Love” accompanied by Richard playing the accordion. In this we were encouraged to sing one line of chorus by the end of the evening we were singing in four part round! The ten songs played were from a Worcestershire or Warwickshire and a variety of historical periods. Some brought back memories of singing at school from The National Song Book. One of the oldest a drinking song originally referenced to the Spanish Armada and, as with many folk songs, changed over the years to refer to the Crimean War. The final song relevant for Remembrance Day was the version sung by Warwickshire RHA in 1915. There are many versions each adapted by different regiments as a marching song from the original 1873 version. If you get the chance to hear Richard alone or with his group make the effort whether it be folk, rock or skiffle. It’s fun.

And more fun on Tuesday December 9 with Chocolate Bingo. 7.30pm Cropthorne and Charlton Village Hall, prizes of course, mince pies, coffee, tea and maybe a glass of wine.

Carol and Jenny dealt with the small number of notices. The most important of these being the grant from Cropthorne Walkabout. This year the money will be used to take all members to look round the facilities of Denman College and attend a cookery demonstration. Thank you Walkabout Committee.

Visitors are always welcome. For further information contact the secretary on 01386 860617.
