THE Society’s Spring Show on April 9 once again proved to be a great success, despite the abnormally mild Winter weather causing some species to flower much too early in the year. However, from the 23 classes our members managed to produce a total of 146 entries, including several classes of Spring flowers, alpines, branches of foliage and flowering shrubs, heathers, camellias, pot plants, clematis, orchids and trays of seedlings, together with 19 arrangements in the Floral Art section. The judge, Mr Duncan Coombes, who has previously given talks on various subjects at our evening meetings, commented on the excellent quality of the entries and then presented the Cups. Annette Haines was awarded with the ‘Dr Andy Cox Rose Bowl’ for gaining the most points in the Horticultural Section. The runner-up, John Alexander Head, received the ‘George Cope Cup’ and the ‘Marjory Irons Cup’ was presented to Sue Savage for attaining third place. The ‘Bidford Flower Cup’ for the highest score in the Floral Art Section was won by Josie Sawtell, who also received the ‘Jordan Vase’ for the ‘Best in Show’ - a beautiful Spring Basket arrangement. Congratulations were given to the Cup winners and to all the members who contributed to making this such a splendid event.

The Society’s next meeting is on June 16, when Frank Hardy will present a talk entitled “Ground Cover Plants That Really Work.” Visitors are always welcome to join us (£3, including refreshments.) Meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month at 7.45pm in the Crawford Hall, Bidford on Avon.
